Ortel And Lucent Technologies Team Up On Next-Generation 980-nm Pump Laser Modules For Metro Networks
Alhambra, CA. Ortel Corp. (Nasdaq: ORTL) today announced an exclusive agreement with Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) Microelectronics Group for next-generation uncooled 980 nanometer (nm) pump laser modules used in metro optical network applications. Under terms of the multi-million dollar agreement, Ortel will provide fully-qualified uncooled 980nm pump laser chips to Lucent s Microelectronics Group for use in their next-generation Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) modules designed for metropolitan area networks.
"This alliance enables Ortel and Lucent to combine both companies proven abilities in laser design and automated packaging to develop an innovative uncooled 980nm laser solution for metro EDFA modules," said Steve Rizzone, chairman, president and CEO of Ortel.
"This supplier relationship will allow us to lower the costs of EDFA modules in the metro market," said Anders Olsson, Optoelectronics business unit vice president with Lucent s Microelectronics Group. "Since these modules can operate over a wide temperature range, on-board coolers are not needed, resulting in significant savings in power consumption and system costs. As a result, we see the cost of 980-nm pump lasers dropping to commodity-levels in the next six months."
