Conexant Enables Phone Manufacturers To Produce A Full Line Of Digital Spread Spectrum (DSS) Cordless Phones Based On Its Newest Chipset Offering

Conexant Expands Family of Industry-Leading Cordless Phone Chipsets, Adding Caller ID and 2.4 GHz Technology

Newport Beach, CA. Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CNXT) today introduced a chipset family for DSS cordless phones to meet a variety of customer design needs, feature requirements and price points. Conexant s latest offering supports caller ID, two-line, speakerphone and voice messaging for both the 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands, allowing phone manufacturers to produce a complete line of cordless phones based on one complete chipset solution. DSS technology provides the longest range, greatest clarity and highest security available in a cordless phone.

"2.4 GHz functionality and caller ID are two cordless phone features that are now in demand by retailers and consumers alike," said Dale Ford, director and principal analyst at GartnerGroup/Dataquest. "Conexant s new chipsets will enable manufacturers to quickly bring to market DSS cordless phones that meet growing customer demand for these leading-edge features."

According to industry analyst firm GartnerGroup/Dataquest, the semiconductor market for digital cordless handsets will grow to almost $1.4 billion in 2003 with unit sales of 900 MHz DSS cordless phones reaching more than 37 million units by 2003. "We expect to see continued growth in unit sales of DSS cordless phones as DSS is rapidly replacing older analog technologies on the market," added Ford.

"In 1995, Conexant introduced the first complete semiconductor solution for 900 MHz DSS cordless phones. Today, we continue to lead the market with this fourth generation offering," said Scott Bibaud, director of marketing for Conexant s Wireless Communications Division. "We are excited that consumers are starting to understand and demand the increased clarity, range and privacy that DSS provides."

Conexant s cordless solution - consisting of a 900 MHz or 2.4 GHz transceiver, a RF power amplifier and a baseband device - provides unmatched flexibility for phone manufacturers. Because Conexant s 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz solutions use the same baseband technology, only the radio must be modified to make a 2.4 GHz phone - resulting in more streamlined design cycles and faster time-to-market. Furthermore, Conexant is among the first to support Multiple Extension Interfacing (MEI) hardware and software, which optimizes caller ID functionality between multiple phones. The chips flexible hardware and software architecture makes it easy for customers to customize their own products and differentiate themselves in this highly competitive market segment.

Available now, Conexant s new DSS chipsets are priced starting at $25 in quantities of 100K.
