RF Micro Devices Supplying GaAs HBT Power Amplifier and Low Noise Amplifiers to Motorola

Greensboro, NC. RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD) a leading provider of proprietary radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, today announced it has received production orders from Motorola for three GaAs HBT (gallium arsenide heterojunction bipolar transistor) ICs for use in Motorola s iDEN(R) handsets.

"We are very pleased that RFMD s devices have been chosen for these successful business communication tools. The iDEN phones are the first of Motorola s high-volume production handsets to use our GaAs HBT power amplifiers," said Greg Thompson, RFMD(TM) director of sales. "We are developing a strong relationship with Motorola and are rapidly expanding our design and technical support team for this major customer. With the ongoing expansion of our wafer fab operations in Greensboro, we believe we will be in a good position to grow our sales with Motorola."

The high power and high efficiency of RFMD s RF2138 HBT power amplifier allows for extended battery life and longer talk times. The RF2361 and RF2442 are low noise amplifiers with a very high dynamic range designed for digital cellular applications.

The recently announced iDEN i2000(TM) digital world phone operates on GSM networks in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and iDEN networks, and is targeted at business users. Motorola s i1000plus(TM) handset with internet capability is a powerful option for business users, combining cellular and two-way radio with available features including speakerphone, silent alert and caller ID.

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) is a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronic solutions. Sales in 1999 were $30.9 billion.
