UEC Ramps Up Production Facility With Order For 10 Additional Enterprise Tools From EMCORE

Somerset, N.J, USA. EMCORE Corporation (Nasdaq: EMKR) announced the purchase of 10 additional TurboDisc Enterprise production systems to United Epitaxy Company (UEC) in Hsinchu, Taiwan, R.O.C. UEC already has six EMCORE MOCVD systems, which are used for the production of high brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs). The additional systems ordered by UEC represent EMCORE s flagship family of high-volume Enterprise Series MOCVD production platforms. The tools are configured for the production of HB-LEDs and electronic materials. The Enterprise tools will be delivered over the next two years.

Commenting on their additional purchase, Dr. Kuo-Hsin Huang, Chairman, CEO and Founder of UEC said, "We decided to purchase our first Enterprise platforms after visiting EMCORE more than a year ago, where we observed the tools growing InGaAIP HB-LEDs in EMCORE s E2M foundry. When we later verified this performance with 24 hour, 7 day production in our own facility, we decided that the Enterprise is the most reliable tool on the market for the mass production of HB-LEDs."

"EMCORE and UEC have a long history of cooperation and support. UEC purchased their first tool from EMCORE over six years ago, which enabled them to be the first MOCVD-based company in Taiwan to enter the commercial market," said Reuben Richards, President and CEO of EMCORE. "The addition of our highest throughput platform to UEC s Taiwan facility marks the completion of their facility ramp up, and we look forward to a continued close relationship between our two companies."

"Our first LEDs were produced from an EMCORE system, and based on the results from the E2M foundry, we know that the systems can consistently produce the required uniformity and composition for electronic materials, particularly 6" InGaP HBTs. This combination of proven production results made our decision to buy 10 additional systems an easy one," said Tzer-Perng Chen, President of UEC. "We look forward to our continued relationship and expansion into other markets with EMCORE."
