FITEL Technologies, Inc. and Optigain, Inc. Announce Agreement That Will Increase Advancement and Production of Optical Amplification Products

Clinton, NJ. FITEL Technologies, Inc. today announced the completion of an agreement to acquire a majority equity position of Optigain Inc., a Rhode Island-based supplier of optical amplifiers.

The agreement, which was completed in early June, 2000, augments both FITEL Technologies and Optigain s commitment to North American amplification solutions by providing a development and production location for optical equipment, both at the component and modular level. FITEL Technologies will work in conjunction with Optigain s marketing, sales and design teams in the development and marketing of products at the Rhode Island location.

The agreement positions FITEL to provide an even broader suite of amplification products and Raman pump units for signal amplification in optical networks. The Rhode Island facility will be a center of excellence for Raman technologies as well as a North American design and manufacturing center for amplification products.

"This is a spectacular opportunity for us to combine resources with a focused and talented group of product designers, engineers and researchers," stated Dr. John Pilitsis, CEO of FITEL Technologies, Inc. "With Optigain s presence, expertise and know-how in amplifier products and subsystems, we will be able to continue advancing Raman technologies and sharpen our focus in providing customers with advanced amplification solutions."

Amplification products for the C and L-band have grown exponentially in demand over the past few years due to the increased reliance on fiber optic communications and transmission systems. Raman technologies have recently become an important factor in long-haul transmission systems due in part to their ability to increase the bandwidth per channel and optimizing signal to noise ratio for 10Gb to 40Gb systems by using the existing fiber as the gain medium.

FITEL s integrated Raman pump system uses a series of high-powered pump units to optimize the signal to noise ratio of an optical signal, allowing the signal to travel longer distances with less regeneration. FITEL develops and markets some of the most powerful and reliable pump modules available on the market. The Raman pump units are used in conjunction with Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) in long-haul and high-speed transmission systems. FITEL also manufactures some of the smallest single channel EDFAs available on the market.

"We are extremely pleased to establish a partnership with a company with such a strong history of advancements in the field of optical and optoelectronic components," said Dr. Harish R. D. Sunak, President of Optigain. "Working with FITEL will allow us the opportunity to showcase and market our talents in the field of fiber amplification and fiber laser products, as well as continue our record of success in customer satisfaction."

Optigain, Inc., is a manufacturer of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers and related equipment for the telecommunications market. Optigain was founded in 1990 and is based in Peace Dale, Rhode Island. FITEL Technologies, Inc., is a wholly owned company that develops and markets a wide variety of fiber optic and optoelectronics solutions by The Furukawa Electric Company, Ltd., of Japan. FITEL is headquartered in Clinton, NJ. For more information on FITEL Technologies, Inc., visit the company s website at www.fiteltech.com.
