Fitel Technologies, Inc. Announces Mass Production of Raman Rainbow Pump for High Speed, Long-Haul Transmission Systems

Clinton, NJ. Fitel Technologies, Inc., and its parent company, The Furukawa Electric Company, Inc., today announced the mass production of their 14xx series Rainbow Pump for Raman applications in next generation Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems. Furukawa pioneered the development of the Rainbow Pump and is a world leader in the production of pump lasers for Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs).
The Rainbow Pump provides power to specific wavelengths between 1400nm and 1500nm. This "rainbow" of wavelengths is created using Furukawa s proven, next generation 300mW stabilized semiconductor laser technology. These pumps are a key component in the design and implementation of Raman amplification. When used in conjunction with EDFAs, Raman amplification increases the capabilities of existing transmission systems and enables extended optical transmission spans in next generation WDM systems.
The production increase is in response to the recent surge in customer demand for Rainbow Pumps, which have already been supplied to a large number of system makers for use in trial systems. The use of Raman amplification is expected to increase significantly over the next year as high-speed, long haul transmission systems continue to proliferate North America and abroad.
Furukawa currently holds a 70% market share for 1480nm pump lasers, and is positioning itself to meet the increased demand for Rainbow Pumps by leveraging its world-class manufacturing and output capabilities. Furukawa expects sales for Rainbow Pumps to exceed $200 million for fiscal year 2001.
