Shipment of EMCORE's Wireless Communications Products Grows Over 750%; Company Receives Multi-Million Dollar Order From ANADIGICS, Inc.

Source: Emcore

SOMERSET, NJ. EMCORE Corporation (NASDAQ: EMKR) today announced that its Electronic Materials Division has achieved over 750% growth in shipments of InGaP (indium gallium phosphide) epiwafers over the last year due to increased demand for wireless communications devices. More than half of the growth has been realized through the sale and distribution of 6-inch epiwafers. Future cellular phones will need to support multiple digital standards and handset applications, including GSM, DCS, PCS or AMPS/TDMA 800 and AMPS 1900. EMCORE s pHEMT and HBT epiwafers will be the critical components used in these next generation wireless products requiring much more memory, greater processing power and additional connectivity options.

In related news, EMCORE has received a $10.7 million order from ANADIGICS, Inc., a leading supplier of wireless and broadband communications solutions, to supply 6-inch GaAs (gallium arsenide) HBT and pHEMT wafers for their fiber optic and wireless communications devices. ANADIGICS will be using the epiwafers for power amplifiers for GSM, TDMA and CDMA multi-band wireless handsets and for high-speed digital components for OC-192 data communication applications.

"We have placed this order based on demand for HBT wireless products and pHEMT broadband products, " said Bruce Diamond, Senior Vice President of Operations at ANADIGICS, Inc. "With our plan for strategic wafer supply from EMCORE in place, we can implement our aggressive goals for providing our customers with highly advanced solutions. We have been impressed with EMCORE s ability to provide high volumes of 6-inch GaAs HBT and pHEMT epitaxial wafers, while meeting our requirements for high performance and high yield."

"We have seen strong demand for our epiwafers from major wireless device manufacturers such as ANADIGICS, and the high-volume production for these materials emphasizes that EMCORE continues to meet its customers needs, not only for on-time delivery, but for price and performance requirements as well," remarked Reuben Richards, President and CEO of EMCORE. "We are committed to an aggressive production schedule, and with the expansion of our Somerset facility nearing completion, EMCORE will continue to help customers meet their critical time-to-market needs for products and devices."

According to a recent report by Cahners In-Stat Group, a high tech market research firm, overall semiconductor revenue from wireless handsets will grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 40% through 2004, translating into a total revenue of over $53 billion. The firm finds that semiconductor revenue growth will be attributed to several trends that are currently emerging in the cellular/PCS handset market - trends that will eventually point to more growth, more products and more opportunities for innovation.
