Innovation for the Global Fiber Optics Components Market - AIFOtec's Fiber Grating Laser, FGL

Source: AIFOtec Fiberoptics

Munich, Germany. Speed, performance and low-cost manufacturing - these are the primary advantages of AIFOtec s Fiber Grating Lasers. Transmission of light waves via competitive, conventional methods and products has been abandoned in the search for lower cost solutions at optimum performance, utilizing relatively low cost lasers with an integrated optical filter. The technology, known as FGL (Fiber Grating Laser), was developed at AIFOtec s research and development center in Martinsried near Munich.

The Fiber Grating Laser consists of a Fabry-Perot laser diode, one of the most widely utilized types of laser operating in optical telecommunication networks today, and a fiber grating, the filter. By utilizing this approach, higher flexibility and yield during manufacture can be achieved by selecting the appropriate filter that determines the desired, specific laser emission wavelength into the fiber media. One of the advantages of this approach is a reduction in undesirable component chirp, allowing for potential longer transmission distances over standard, dispersive, singlemode fibers.

Another special feature of the FGL technology lies in the application of a taper laser that was developed in AIFOtec s research center. The taper region of the laser conditions the light prior to emission thus negating the need for use of optical lenses, and reduces the far field angle and modifies the spot size of emitted light to better match the core diameter of standard singlemode fibers. The positive results include: A short resonator setup for the laser module and guaranteed high modulation bandwidth.

The Fiber Grating Laser displays all of the technical advantages of a highly efficient DFB laser and can still be manufactured at low cost.

AIFOtec based in Martinsried near Munich, Germany, was originally established in 1998 and specializes in the development and manufacture of fiber optic components, modules and sub-systems that receive and modify light signals and transmit them across high speed optical networks. Products are primarily targeted at, but no limited to, the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) market.
