Slipstream unveils direct RF processor at EuMW
At European Microwave Week (EuMW) 2024, UK-based Slipstream Engineering Design unveiled a breakthrough GaN-based module that boosts radar processing by combining digital and RF technologies.
Called ASTRO Nova, the innovative direct RF-on-the-edge platform is a wideband adaptive radar processor designed for precise, dynamic beam steering, enabling improved detection, tracking, and communication in demanding environments.
"With the ASTRO platform, our goal was to combine the versatility of a software-defined radio unit with a reimagined RF front end — freeing it from the traditional constraints of fixed RF power amplifier performance," explained Phillip Wilson, Slipstream's managing director.
"By harnessing cutting-edge FPGAs with integrated RF converters and GaN-based technologies, we’ve transformed system architecture, integrating the digital transceiver with the RF front end,” he added.
The company says the module offers high power with low SWAP-C and features reconfigurable clocking for flexible use of onboard or external RF sampling, ensuring broad compatibility and performance. It can be integrated across radar systems, and supports complex waveform transmission, paving the way for advanced networked sensing and communication systems.
GaN technology is key to enabling this level of functionality in a compact design, according to Slipstream. Its high efficiency and power density provide critical size, weight, and thermal advantages for achieving RF power in constrained environments, such as airborne and space-based applications.
Slipstream says its digital RF design capabilities have been pivotal in developing the module.
Positive feedback from existing customers and partners has given the team a vote of confidence and plans to make ASTRO ready for space-based communications are now underway.
